Consanguine / Related by blood

Milano, 2019

Consanguine, or “related by blood”, is a photographic series documenting the phenomenon of blood donation by stranger people in Italy. Although it is difficult to find recent and official data, it seems that 4% of blood donors are strangers. As the anthropologist Marcel Mauss has revealed in his fundamental essay The Gift (1925), collective gifts build connections and are the basis of society itself. Even in utilitarian societies like ours, this symbolic value remains, and it is even more evident if we observe the gift from people whose membership in Italian society is continually challenged.

Consanguine is a project by Simona Bariselli.
